Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister and Snow White
Gentle Readers:

A reminder that Disney's interpretation of Gregory Maguire's "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister" will be airing Sunday, March 10, 2002 on ABC's Wonderful World of Disney at 7PM ET/6PM CENTRAL.

If you are interested, please watch and come back to comment here on the movie.

Next week, same time, same place will feature a new movie based on Snow White, starring Kristen Kreuk, who plays Lana Lang on WB's "Smallville." ("Smallville" is one of my wonderful guilty pleasures this season! What a great exploration of good and evil....) The movie is titled: "Snow White: Fairest of Them All."

The posters for both movies are up in Los Angeles and quite attractive. Read more at:

We have already started this conversation with three posts in the movie topic. Heidi--can you transfer them here?

Snow White
Ok, what on earth was up with those rainbow colored dwarves! I admit, I missed the beginning of the movie- does it have to do with the Lang Rainbow Fairy Book? They looked more like Teletubbies! Miranda Richardson was as deliciously wicked as ever. ::sigh:: I guess I just have to wait for this and Confessions to come out on DVD.

Re: Snow White
Rainbow colored teletubby - dwarves: LOL! The movie did have a somewhat disturbing mixed bunch in that group, with the dwarves, gnomes and one regular sized adult - not to mention the variety of accents. I think the rainbow jumping concept would work wonderfully for younger audiences, but it sort of took away from the "gothic" (the newspaper's description, not mine) feel of the flick.

I'm still trying to decide whether I like the character of Snow White. She wasn't exactly passive, BUT...

I did enjoy the borrowing of the Snow Queen's glass-shard interference with clear seeing. Maybe it wasn't classically Snow White but it did lend itself nicely to the presented story line. When the bear was introduced, I thought we'd get a bit more of a fairy tale crossover with echoes of the beast bridegroom theme. I guess it was too much to hope for - we just got a lot of grunting. And the scene where he was licking the ice by the princess' face... Oh Dear! And the ending - ACK! Am I the only one dismayed at the lack of imagination there???

I'm not trying to suggest that the movie didn't have any redeeming characteristics. It just always seems way too easy to find something to bust on when it comes to Disney productions.

Snow White
We came in halfway through so didn't get that the bear was somehow the prince. (Is this right?) So the licking took on a. . .well, let's not go there. And we hadn't clue one who the Middle Eastern-ish truly ugly magic dude in the end was.

I thought there were some interesting redactive choices: the flying mirror was especially nice.

But the dialogue was so bad, we were wincing. Sunday's face mask kept slipping so you could see where it didn't work. Why don't they hire me or Midori or Terri--or Emma Bull & Will Shetterly--or any one of a gadzillion competant fantasy/fairy tale writers to do the scripts?

I actually had a feeling that it was the prince, maybe as a reference to Snow White and Rose Red. And I think they should definitely hire all of you to work on these scripts- I've seen better scripts created by high school students than what they had. I still can't get over those rainbow costumes. It will haunt me for the next week!

Blech!
I agree totally. I was really hoping that I could use this in one of my classes (I am an English teacher and just about to start a fairy tale unit with my sophomores). But I can just imagine their reactions if I showed them the bear licking scene. I, too, though there might be some tie in to Snow White/Rose Red, but no such luck. I wish they had hired someone to instill some magic in the script!

Snow White and Ugly Stepsister
I saw the Snow White Film around Christmastime here, only the latter half and it didn't really live up to expectations. Tanith Lee's book is a lot better than whoever came up with the script for that one!

I think it's very difficult to watch a live action film based on fairytales, because your expectations are always based on what you've read, but some work out quite well. (Legend, Princess Bride, Willow, Ever After.)

I haven't seen the film of Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister but I've recently read the book, and it was excellent, with that little bit of a twist a the end.
