Thanks
That was a brilliant little tour de force. Thanks.
I had Mr. Fox in my FAVORITE FOLK TALES AROUND THE WORLD and love to storytell it.
Did a retelling of Fitcher's Bird in NOT ONE DAMSEL IN DISTRESS.
I find it an absolutely fascinating group of stories.

Bluebeard retellings
Jane, my students absolutely love both of those collections. I gave them a list of recommended anthologies of fairy tales, and both, especially _Damsels_, were by far the favorites.
Here is a list of Bluebeard stories; this isn't complete yet.
Folk (or claiming to be folk):
Perrault, "Bluebeard"
Grimms, "Fitcher's Bird," "Blaubart" (see Zipes trans.), "The Virgin Mary's Child" (see Tatar for explanation)
Calvino, "Silver Nose," "The Three Chicory Gatherers" (_Italian Folktales_)
Dorson, "Old Foster" (_Buying the Wind_)
Randolph, "Mr. Fox," "How Toodie Fixed Old Grunt" (_The Devil's Pretty Daughter_)
Jacobs, "Mr. Fox" (_English Fairy Tales_)
Briggs, "The Oxford Student," "The Girl who Got Up in a Tree," "The Open Grave," "The Cellar of Blood," "Dr. Forster, "Captain Murderer" (all from _Dictionary of British Folktales_)
Delarue, "The White Dove" (from _French Folktales_, I think)
Literary Tellings:
Atwood, "Bluebeard's Egg" (in Tatar, _Classic Fairy Tales_), _The Robber Bride_, "Alien Territory" (_Good Bones_)
Carter, "The Bloody Chamber"
Tieck, _Ritter Blaubart_
Bechstein, _Das Marchen vom Ritter Blaubart_
Block, "Blue" (_The Rose and the Beast_)
Ellesmere, _Bluebeard, or, Dangerous Curiosity and Justifiable Homicide_
Tully, _Blue Beard, or, Hints to the Curious_
Thackeray, "Bluebeard's Ghost" (in Zipes, _Spells of Enchantment_)
France, "The Seven Wives of Bluebeard" (also _S of E_)
Warner, "Bluebeard's Daughter" (also _S of E_)
Balazs, libretto for Bartok's _Duke Bluebeard's Castle_
Bronte, _Jane Eyre_

Sideline
Here is an interesting side-light. When I was doing DAMSELS, I wanted to retell "Silver Nose" but the only telling I could find was the Calvino. I asked permission with payment, credit, and they could see the retelling before it was published, and they would not let me. Reason: they said that was his own personal combination of stories.
So I retold Fitcher's Bird--which I found in a variety of translations--instead.

bluebeard
Terri-
Clarissa Pinkola Estes has a wonderful Bluebeard retelling in Women Who Run with the Wolves as well as a powerful interpretation of the character's in the tale as voices in one woman's psyche. So the brothers who come to the rescue are really called upon by a woman mustering her own counterattack against the inner predator. It might be of help to you.
