Best Greek Mythology for Elementary School Children?
I was wondering if the board had any recommendations. I looking for a good compilation of Greek mythology for youngish kids. I would like the "real" stories, but I find that my translations of the Iliad, Odyssey, Thebian plays and general Greek mythology are a little difficult for this age group to follow. Any suggestions?

Greek Mythology
Maybe Greek Mythology isn't appropiate for young children. I can't think of any stories that would be, but I'm sure you will get some suggestions.

D'aulaire's Book of Greek Myth...
My own personal favorite as a child was D'aulaire's (I may be misspelling the name here, for which I apologize) Book of Greek Myths. I first picked it up at the age of 7, and enjoyed it almost as much when I cam across it in the course of packing this last week. The translations are literate and enjoyable, and the more adult bits have been glossed over for the audience. Good luck! You're doing a great thing - some of those kids who you introduce to the source material at this young age will undoubtably become addicted (as I was), and ten or twenty years from now, we'll probably find them here on the board looking for more material to sate their hunger.

Picard
The first book I ever took out of the library (that I can recall) was "The Odyssey" retold by Barbara Leonie Picard. I was 8 or 9. (There are some who point to this as an explanation of why I write fantasy. Which is maybe not far off the mark, and allows me to blame Homer for everything.)
She has also done an "Iliad" to go with it. It's a nicely done retelling of Homer, leaving nothing out. This was in the 1950s, and the books are still in print, if that's enough further recommendation.

It's Greek to me
Certainly the Daulaire's overview stands up still.

But many picture books have been made from particular picture books. I, for example. did WINGS which is a retelling of the Daedalus and Icarus story.

I am also embarked on a series of novels about the Greek heroes when they are young teens. So far we (co-writer is Robert J. Harris) have out ODYSSEUS IN THE SERPENT MAZE and HIPPOLYTA & THE CURSE OF THE AMAZONS. This winter will be ATALANTA & THE ARCADIAN BEAST. After that JASON & THE GORGON'S BLOOD.
