READERCON nr. Boston 7/12
I've been yakking about this under the Wiscon topic, but in case you haven't been lurking there, and might be interested in a gathering of like-minded souls, I wanted to make sure you were aware of a small & very sociable sf/f convention called Readercon:
July 12-14
Burlington, Mass.
www.readercon.org
The focus is on books and talking about reading, and, unlike some sf/f conventions, the assumption is that we do read out of genre, and don't draw hard lines between genres - it really is kind of an Interstitial con. Very smart people show up, and the talk spills out into the halls.... It's always been my vacation into a weekend of passionate nonstop talking about writing & reading. I wouldn't miss it. No one wears costumes, and no one shuts up.
While it isn't renowned for its focus on women (it was founded by terrific smart nice geeky boys who are, as they put it, "heavily into punk/indie rock"), this year's Guests of Honor are Octavia Butler and Gwyneth Jones! The Tiptree Award ceremonies will also be held there this year.
There will be a panel on Angela Carter - here's the description from my program sign-up sheet:
" Angela Carter. Angela, we miss your mordant wit and your stylish
prose. We miss your fairy tales that always turned out to be so horribly real. We've been quoting your quip about "too much _fin_ this _siecle_," and wishing you were here to see your prophecy come true. When we realize there will be no more stories with your distinctive flavors,
it's as if we're suddenly missing a limb. And examining the stump of that limb, we realize that we almost certainly chewed it off ourselves. We know that if you were still here you could tell us exactly why we did that, maybe even make us laugh about it with a frisson of dread. (If any of the preceding are sentiments you share, join us for a celebratory wake in honor of Angela Carter.)"
See you there, maybe?

Promotional materials?
I just sent my check last night, so I will be attending!
Kate, et al: if you cannot make it, but want promotional materials there, drop me an email and I'll send you my address. I'll be on vacation for the next week, but will check email as soon as I get home.
Dandelion wishes,
Kerrie

Ready for ReaderCon!
Thanks, Kerrie! We don't need any assistance ourselves, but the convention, as it says on their website, "runs on volunteers" - I'm sure they would adore it if you turned up willing to lend a hand. Let them know when you get there, and you'll make LOTS of friends....
See you soon!

More than ready!
Great! I'll be there with bells on! (Maybe literally.) I am so excited I keep jotting down notes for some of the discussions while standing at the copier!
The schedule keeps changing though! One minute I could go to both "Angela Carter" and "The Aging of SF" and now they're at the same time! How can I choose?! You can bet I'll be at the Interstitial Arts meeting and the "Sound and Spirit: LOTR Preview" though!
Kate, are you still in the area?
Dandelion dreams,
Kerrie
