Orphan tales a la "Harry Potter"
Hello,
In a similar vein to my previous question, I'm wondering if anyone knows of any myths/fairy tales that would have a similar structure to "Harry Potter" - not about wizardry, but more about the child that destiny has chosen for great things having to go through an "orphan" experience. Thanks. Scott

Once again
King Arthur rather fits here, too.
And some versions of Cinderella have the same elements--she is orphaned and suffers to later become a queen.
But parallels would be found more during the heydey of orphan literature in Victorian times and after. Now that I say that, I can't think of any specific characters, but they will come to me later.
Heidi, who has to get back to work....

Re: Once again
Try this link, it's fairly comprehensive:

The King Arthur myth has in fact been reworked in film for years, including in the wildly popular "Sixth Sense".
Stories about gifted orphans abound, if only for the fact they have to survive by their wits. Dido Twite, Persus, and Taran (of Lloyd Alexander's famous children's series). Mowgli, the little boy raised by wolves in "The Jungle Book" is a favorite.

Re: Once again
Victorian orphans :
Burnett's Sara Crewe and Mary Lennox, who both lose and gain riches of different kinds - material and/or mystical knowledge, Oliver Twist and other Dickinsonian orphans.
Just some quick ideas off the top of my head.
