eleanor farjean and the little bookroom
I may have briefly mentioned this book in a previous post. The memories I stirred prompted me to look it up. Eleanor Farjean is the name of the woman who wrote this modern book of original fairytales, one of which, the seventh princess, is linked here:

I am happy to share it as it was a real favorite of mine and I think anyone on the list who reads it will want to take a closer look at the book.
Two others I particularly liked were "Westwoods" about a prince who makes a series of humorous, albeit disastrous proposals to neighboring princesses after his maidservant throws away his more carefully planned love note. I believe one of them goes:
"You're louder than thunder/You're harsher than salt/We're made as we're born/ So it isn't your fault/My tastes are not yours and your manners aren't mine/ so I've come to propose/And I hope you'll decline!"
The second is a story (can't remember the title) about a little girl who asks for the sun to wear on a chain around her neck, and the whole story is about how he and his advisors scheme to make it all happen. It's really rather cool - the king plays the fool and his daughter plays the straight man in their perceptions of how to get the sun out of the sky.
Surprisingly, she also wrote "Morning has Broken" which was popularized by Cat Stevens.
