Fairy tales in which a *boy* fights the witch
I can think of plenty of fairy tales in which a girl fights a witch or an evil stepmother; can anyone suggest any (even obscure ones) in which a *boy* fights the witch, esp. w/o a sister helping?
Thanks in advance.

Russian tales
Quite a few of the russian hero fairy tales have a young male hero encoutering Baba Yaga (the ultimate witch!). Take a look at the classic collection by Afenasev--it should be available in most libraries.
What about Arthur and Morgan Le Fay? It seems that occasionally the encounters between males and witches have an interesting sexual subtext before things get nasty.
I also think if you extend the catagory of "witch" to include a variety of dangerously powerful women, you could probably include the Greeks--any encounter with the gorgons, or even Circe. And if you really want to get technical, Medea is a witch--daughter to a sorcerer and powerful in her own right--(and similar to Arthur and Morgan Le Fay) Jason doesn't fight her, admittedly, but he disrespects her and feels the weight of her vengence.

Re: Fairy tales in which a *boy* fights the witch
Thanks; I've ordered this book.
I've also been thinking hard about the Witch Queen archetype in other ways. Snow White; a Star Trek episode about a Goddess of Death program ("Masks"); a friend, who says she turns into the Witch Queen at work, to fight the evils of bad treatment of nursing home patients. Hm. Lots more to go.

Re: Fairy tales in which a *boy* fights the witch
C.S. Lewis writes of a boy fighting a witch - I believe the book is the first in the series. It is a prequel to "the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" and I beleive it chronicles the very first trip through the wardrobe. "The Magician's Nephew" perhaps?
