Looking for French Fairy Tales
Morning - I'm enrolled in a directed studies course in which I am studying the French Fairy Tale authors of the 17th century salons. I've found quite a lot of information on Marie Catherine d'Aulnoy but hardly anything on Marie-Jean l'Heritier. L'Heritier was the niece of Charles Perreault. Search engines bring up some info, but not whether her works are available in English (I do read French but haltingly). Any ideas or directions towards l"Heritier would be most appreciated.

Re: Looking for French Fairy Tales
What a great thing to be studying! I'm envious....
Have you tried Jack Zipes's French fairy tale collection Beauties,
Beasts and Enchantments? That's the most complete collection of
French salon tales in English that I know of. There's also Wonder
Tales edited by Marina Warner, a shorter book but with some wonderful
translations by a variety of contemporary writers. For nonfiction
on the subject, try: Nancy Canepa's Out of the Woods: The Origins
of the Literary Fairy Tale in Italy and France; Lewis C. Seifert’s
Fairy Tales, Sexuality and Gender in France, 1670-1715: Patricia
Hannon’s Fabulous Identities; and Elizabeth Wanning Harries's new
book Twice Upon a Time: Women Writers and the History of the Fairy
Tale. Also check out back issues of Don's excellent Marvels &
Tales: Journal of Fairy Tale Studies: www.langlab.wayne.edu/MarvelsHome/Marvels_Tales.html.
Two other web sites to try:
www.endicott-studio.com/forconte.html
and iabramson.web.wesleyan.edu/salons.htm.
Also, Delia Sherman's fine historical novel The Porcelain Dove was directly inspired by traditional French fairy tales. It's not a retelling of any one tale, but uses elements from a variety of them to explore issues of gender and domestic power relationships during the days of the French Revolution.
