Three Pigs wins Caldecott
David Wiesner adds another fairy tale to the Caldecott list, albeit a greatly fractured fairy tale. His "The Three Pigs" was announced as the 2002 Caldecott Winner today. Perfect excuse to look at the book if you haven't already seen it.

More off topic:

Wiesner's book was one of my top contenders along with the Caldecott Honor book, 'The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins,' one of my other favorites of the year.

The Newbery books completely surprised me, but I haven't been paying as much attention to them and they haven't been on many "Best of" lists. I would have chosen differently which is why I will never be on a selection committee. Excepting "Everything on a Waffle," I will be hard pressed to convince kids they want to read these books. There is often a huge difference between what kids enjoy and what wins a Newbery medal. Looks like no one tried to bridge the gap much again.

For children's fairy tale books, Levine's "Ella Enchanted" at least won a Newbery Honor in its year of publication and it is nearly impossible to find a kid who doesn't enjoy it.

Re: Three Pigs wins Caldecott
Hey Heidi -

Glad you clued me in. I had forgotten about today's announcement. Jeesh- historical fiction certainly has been big for the Newbery Committee in the last several years. 'Bud, Not Buddy' had a strong appeal in the schools where I've worked, but not the kind of overwhelming popular appeal of 'Ella Enchanted' or 'Holes'. Many of the others have been harder sells - appealing to very specific niches.

The Three Pigs though has been a great hit. Kids just stare and stare, noticing something different each time - even if they don't get the entire concept.

Re: Three Pigs wins Caldecott
my father is a school librarian, i should know this but what are the Caldecott and the Newbery Awards given out for? I know that it's children's books and that one is for illustrations (or that has always been my understanding) and that the other is for the writing?

just curious,
jill

Caldecott/Newberry awards
Jill,

You got that right. The Newberry is awarded for the outstanding contribution in American literature for children and the Caldecott is awarded for the outstanding American picture book. You can get a complete list of winners at the ALA website. Weisner's Three Little Pigs is a great book. I am glad to see it won.

Correction noted and congratulations
Jane,

Belated congratulations for your own contribution to Heart to Heart which I believe was a Printz Honor Book (is that right?). I am notoriously bad at editing my own entries here - I apologize in advance if I don't have this correct.

Awards
Jane,

My library didn't indicate if that was this year's award or last, but either way - congratulations.

awards
This year's Printz--an honor book. I had a poem in it. Not sure how I feel about an anthology winning such an honor. I mean--who shold be getting the prize? The anthologist--or the poets?
