Recommending Stained Glass
Hi All,

I'm just about finished this book - Stained Glass by Michael Bedard - and thought some of you might enjoy it. It's a contemporary fairy tale of sorts, set in Canada. Charles meets a homeless girl in a church and when she's injured by some falling glass from a broken stained glass window, decides to help her. She's a mysterious girl - she can't remember her name or where she lives, she plays perfect classical guitar and doesn't seem to care about social conventions. Because of interwoven pieces about the making of the glass window and the church's caretaker who's trying to fix the window, the reader suspects early on that the girl
s not really of Charles's world. She becomes the old-woman-on-the-road figure in the story, helping Charles heal from the losses in his life, making him feel again, helping him accept and live with his past and his present. It's a lyrical and poignant story. Though it's marketed as a YA, and I'm sure will find some readers there, I think many adults would be moved by this story of loss and healing.
