I think
If I recall, the princess rolled the apples down to him. Anyone else recall differently?

Memory
I thought he put nails in his boots.

Different versions
Nails under the boots, as Jane wrote, is one version I remember, as well as nails under the horse's hoofs or even diamonds in the horseshoes (I think that one was in a film version from - then - Czecheslowakia). Or simply a magic horse!

In one version of Grimm's the seven ravens, I think I recall the sister using bones to form a ladder up a glass hill. I might be mistaken there, or simply confuse it with something else... Anyone who remembers that one?

glass hill
in the seven ravens the good sister cuts off her little
finger to use as a key.i'm not sure but in one story
doesn't the glass mountain move on its own?

eagle
In the Andrew Lang version, he holds onto an eagle's talons.

ditto
In the 1970 Barthelme version, an eagle carries him up too (but he cuts off the eagle's feet, a detail that distresses me to no end--is it in any other version?).

Yep
Kate,

Yes, it's exactly the same in the Lang (Blue Fairy Book, I think). He latches onto the eagle's feet with something I can't remember and cuts them off when he wants to descend.

Blue Fairy Book
The Blue Fairy book has enchanted horses, the princess rolling the apples downhill, and no mention of eagle's talons. Same with the Norse version I have.

Feet
Why, oh why couldn't he just let go? There must be some reason of course. (Ah, fairy tales.)
