Dictionaries and Encyclopedia
I recently read an article recommending the Oxford Dictionary of Allusions and The Oxford Dictionary of Phrase and Fables. Both looked interesting and perhaps relevant to this group. Anyone know them?

Also, I have noticed references to several Encyclopedia of interest (most recently The Encycolpedia of Faery?). The Time Life book series has also been mentioned as a good resource.

I was wondering if others had recommended or could recommend general reference books (not tales themselves). It might be nice to have a comprehensive list of favorites in the archives (and in one place).

Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable
As a general reference book, I currently have Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable- Millennium Edition.

It has lots of great background information, terms, motifs, concepts, names and places found in mythology and folklore (and some more modern references as well, like "Hershey bar").

I haven't used the book too much yet, but it is seems to be really helpful, and it is fun to page through. I'm very happy with it!!

Cheers,

Katie

Re: Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable
Jess,

I have this as well (though not the Millenium Edition) and adore it. Another that I wouldn't live without is Katherine Briggs's An Encyclopedia of Fairies.
