Zipes - Arabian Nights
Hi there,

I just picked up a copy of Zipes adaptation of The Arabian Nights (Volume II - Volume I wasn't available). I am curious about your thoughts of it. I am sure it is very different from the Lang version I have in my collection. Any favorite tales?

AN
Jess, as far the AN go, I think the best (and the most accurate) translation is the lovely two volume set from Haddawy Husain--in a very affordable paperback from Norton. His introduction is quite illuminating about the history of the various manuscripts, the infamous forgeries (Aladdin's Lamp being one of them!) and the style and tone of the early tales.

I love 'em all. They are like stuffed dates--I start reading one and I can't stop!

Re: AN
Jess, I would second Midori's choice of the Haddawy volumes. I used these specifically for an article I wrote for Realms of Fantasy last summer, and they are, as she says, the most accurate. Haddawy extracts the core tales of the AN in the first volume (which is available as a nice, small hardcover from Knopff for about the price of most trade paperbacks), and fills the second one with the tales we have come to *think* of as representative of the AN, but which are in fact of more dubious origin. Very readable, without all the glossing that Burton and the rest do (Burton's notes are way more interesting than his translations).

Best,
Greg

Hmm, makes me wonder if I didn't get the right thing. Well, I will read and enjoy anyway, but my next purchase will be the Haddawy. Thanks!
