Tom Thumb in the comics
Can anyone tell me if the traditional story of Tom Thumb, with its Arthurian setting, has ever appeared in a comic book version? Some searching on likely websites has turned up only a Dell Four-Color title from 1959 which adapted the movie, but the movie didn't use Merlin or the setting in King Arthur's court. I suspect that the traditional version may have been adapted in one of the early comic books like Walt Kelly's Fairy Tale Parade, but I haven't been able to find a source of info on the contents of those books. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Tom thumb in comics
Dan,

TOM THUMB is adapted to comics in the second issue of FAIRY TALE PARADE. However this version, I'm sorry to say, has no link to King Arthur's court. It is a very short(6 pages) adaptation and concerns harvesting a field and avoiding being eaten by a cow. Not, I would say, one of this series's best efforts. Also I can't identify the artist but it is NOT drawn by Walt Kelly.

Good luck on your hunt. Let me know if you find anything, I'd love to see it myself.

One day I'll catalog the stories in all 15 issues of the run of FAIRY TALE PARADE. Some of the adaptations are quite good.

        Best,
        Charles

Tom Thumb in the comics
Charles,

Thanks for the info about Fairy Tale Parade, even if it's negative. I'll keep searching and let you know if anything turns up. If you're ever inclined to do any further searching in your collection, I'd love to know if any other stories in the series used any Arthurian material for a project I'm working on. You can get a glimpse of it on the university website of my colleague, Phil Boardman: www.unr.edu/artsci/wt/boardman/annals/

In any case, thanks again for checking. I'm a long-time admirer of your work.

Dan

Tom thumb or King Arthur, that is the guestion...
If it's King Arthur, then you might want to check out Dell F.C. #775, SIR LANCELOT AND BRIAN. It is apparently a media tie-in with a TV show or movie (I've never even heard of) as the cover is composed of color photographs. However the interior artwork is by a young John Buscema in his most "Hal Foster" mode. The stories feature Arthur and Merlin in supporting roles and all the action happen in and around Camelot.

Interesting book.
