Frau Holle
I'd be willing to be Zipes could point you in the right direction, or perhaps a peek at the Norton Critical edition of the Grimms' tales.

Re: Frau Holle or Mother Holle
Jack Zipes (who, rather than what) is the fairy tale scholar who edited _The Complete Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm_ and _The Great Fairy Tale Tradition_, both of which might contain information which could be helpful to you. Good luck!

P.S. - Laura, as long as you're on this thread, could you e-mail me? I'd like to talk to you about the ICFA, and I've completely lost your-e-mail address.

Frau Holle
Thanks for the clarification re Jack Zipes. I've tried some email addresses with no luck and would appreciate any leads on how to contact him or specific texts that would be a good next step in this search for material related to the Frau Holle story.
Thanks, Selchie

Re: Frau Holle

Selchie,

Let me look through some of my books at home for info on Frau Holle for you.

Have you seen the latest picture book adaptation of the story. I just got it in at the library and it has great illustrations. It is titled "Mother Holly" by John W. Stewig.

Frau Holle
Frau Holle is thought to be a variant of the Norse goddess Frigga. She presided over the weather and was said to have given flax and the skills of spinning and weaving to human beings. There's quite a bit about her and the other names she is known by in The Norsemen by H.A. Guerber under the chapter devoted to Frigga. The story is also mentioned very briefly in James McGlathery's Fairy Tale Romance, in relation to unwanted daughters/stepdaughters; and in Maria Tatar's The Hard Facts of the Grimms' Fairy Tales in chapt. 5, "Spinning Tales: The Distaff Side."
"The King of Colchester's Daughter" and Perrault's "Diamonds and Toads" are two similar tales; both can be found in the Opies' collection of Classic Fairy Tales. Hope this is helpful to you.

Re: Frau Holle
Selchie,
I don't know if a German book could help, but Sonja Ruettner-Cova's "Die gestürzte Göttin. Spuren des Matriarchats in Märchen und Mythen" is a really interesting book on 'Frau Holle' and its matriarchal roots.

Re: Frau Holda
Dear friends,

Another version of Frau Holle is by Benedikte Naubert, "Der kurze Mantel" in *Neue Volksmaerchen der Deutschen*. There is a new 2001 German edition of this collection (original from 1789-1793), edited and annotated by Marianne Henn and Anita Runge.

Naubert's version predates the Grimms' (1789).

The English translation is available as "The Cloak" in *Bitter Healing: German Women Authors 1700-1840* edited by me and Susanne Zantop, in my translation (based on George Soane's)

Naubert's story combines a Guinevere legend with a much expanded version of Frau Holle and the cloak of truth legend of the middle ages. Very clever!

Frau Holle
Thanks for all the sources. I have also checked with some friends in Germany and now feel I have enough to work with.
Regards, Selchie
