cabinet de fees
I'm so glad I found this site. Not only great information, but I can also hobnob with some of my favorite authors and editors.
What can you folks tell me about "Le Cabinet de Fees"? Has it ever been translated into English?

Not the whole thing, as far as I know, just selections from it. Jack Zipes edited a good volume of French fairy tales with many taken from this source....does anyone here know of any other good translations?

Marina Warner edited a volume that had translations of relatively uncommon tales by interesting people (A.S. Byatt, as I recall) ... I can't remember the title off-hand, but if you do a search on Amazon under Marina Warner, it ought to come up.

Yes, Beauties, Beasts and Enchantment by the incredible Jack Zipes is superb as is Wonder Tales by the also amazing Marina Warner. But it was my impression that the "Cabinet" was a much longer work with a lot of volumes and obviously, tales, rather along the lines of Andrew Lang's Color Fairy Books. I've had booksearchers in this country and in France looking for this work for me for years and no one seems to be able to find much of anything. I suppose a university library collection might have something, although I've tried interlibrary loan and no one has it or wants to loan it.
Wow, not to be starstruck or anything, but I am, that Terri Windling responded to my post. Duh, I'm like the biggest tongue-tied fan EVER (caps and all).

Yes, I loved that Marina Warner collection too -- my only complaint being that I wish it was much longer. Forty volumes longer, to be exact, since the original French Cabinet de Fees consists of forty-one volumes -- and is apparently dominated by tales from women writers. I don't know when the full collection was last in print in France (Catja, do you know?), and if there's ever been a full translation in English, I've never heard of it. I'd like to wave a magic wand and make the full collection available in English alongside good translations of the complete fairy tales of Straparola and Basile.
And thanks for the compliment, Stephen. Believe me, I'm not that impressive -- not before my first cup of coffee in the morning, anyway. Now Marina Warner, *she's* impressive.

I checked around, and there doesn't seem to be a full English translation; as far as I know, Zipes' _Beauties, Beasts, and Enchantments_ has the widest selection. However, the full set, in 18 volumes, was reissued (in French) in 1978, and has an indroduction by Jacques Barchilon, the Perrault scholar. There's a set for sale at abebooks.com, if you have oh, about $1400 to spare! You might want to try and get in touch with Barchilon, as he would certainly know the publishing history, and if there are any future translations planned. He's on the faculty at the University of Colorado, Boulder, I believe.
