Woodpeckers
I'm working on a project dealing with myths related to woodpeckers. I thought I'd write a quick post about it. I've found that their drumming (which they do frequently in spring) has given them the role as a war bird. They are also associated with thunder (again the obvious connection) in Native American stories. I started researching these loud, fiesty little birds when a Gila woodpecker began drilling holes in my house. Every morning I'd hear him tap, tap, tapping on house and I'd run out with a golf club to scare it away. I'm sure this was quite the sight. Then he bagan drumming on my evap cooler -- he seemed to enjoy the racket and our battle waged on. Then I tried a plastic owl, which he snuggled right up to before drilling a hole in its head. Bird of war indeed!
