Iraeli/Jewish Fairy Tales
Does anyone know of any modern Israeli fairy tales? Or perhaps Israeli or Jewish retelling of fairy tales?

thanks

Re: Iraeli/Jewish Fairy Tales
Hello everyone.

I have never posted before, but I thought that this would be a perfect opportunity to tout one of my favorite books, Lilith's Cave, Jewish Tales of the Supernatural. By Howard Schwartz, this is a collection of Jewish variants of several well known myths and legends complete with sorcerers and otherworldly denizens. While not necessarily 'fairy tales', these stories certainly acquaint one with some gems of Jewish folklore and are a good place to begin an exploration of the wealth of stories that are embedded in the culture.

Steve Stern
For modern tales, you might look Steve Stern's recent collection, THE WEDDING JESTER (Graywolf Press), and others. Fabulist Jewish stories. Very good.

You need to look at some of the following: anything by Howard Shwartz or Penina Schramm,
selected children's books by Barbara Diamond Goldin and Eric Kimmell. There is a fine University of Chicago book of Israeli folk tales as well.

And I second the LILITH'S CAVE recco.

That's a starter.

Howard Schwartz
I second, or third all the endorsements for Howard Schwartz's work. He has a specific fairy tale volume, _Elijah's Violin and Other Jewish Fairy Tales_. I absolutely adore it. Laura Mc
