Jack and the Beanstalk - Critical Analysis
I am looking for critical papers on Jack and the Beanstalk for a research project and was hoping maybe someone here may have some good sites or tips.

I am currently at a loss and have found only a small amount of information on Jack any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Will

Richard Chase
I don't know offhand any actual critical stuff on Jack and the Beanstalk, but surely Richard Chase's Jack Tales, in which he talks about where he found American versions of the Jack stories, and retells them, might be of some interest.

Jack articles
Several articles on "Jack and the Beanstalk" have been published in the journal Marvels & Tales. One is by Brian E. Szumsky on "The House That Jack Built: Empire and Ideology in Nineteenth-Century British Versions of 'Jack and the Beanstalk'" (vol. 13, no. 1 [1999], pp.11-30. The other is by Christine Goldberg, "The Composition of 'Jack and the Beanstalk'" (vol. 15, no. 1 [2001], pp. 11-26. Those articles will lead to more references.

chapter on Jack
I have a chapter on Jack (Beanstalk and Giant Killer) in my new book -- Tales Then and Now (Libraries Unlimited, November 2001). In it I discuss briefly all the articles etc. that I found on the tales as well as the reworkings of them. It should be available any time now (and is a follow up to New Tales for Old). Thanks, Gail de Vos

Re: chapter on Jack
Thanks for all the help .. I have been able to find some articles that psychoanalytically analyze Jack one by Bruno Bettleheim and William Desmonde. If anyone has more maybe something by Jack Zipes or some other primonent critics it would be helpful.

Thanks Don I have the one by Szumsky it was entertaning ), I will look for the other one also.

Gale I will go check it out .. can i get it anywhere?

Zipes did a few things for the Marvels & Tales Journal I havent had a chance to look at yet though.

Thanks again

Tales, Then and Now
Hello, my first copy of the book arrived on Friday -- so I am not sure if it is available anywhere yet. The publisher is Libraries Unlimited -- and they offer their materials through catalogue (and on-line sales) basically to schools and libraries so the books rarely show up at book stores (but hopefully in libraries). We reversed the names this time, so it is authored by Altmann and de Vos. Hope you can find it, Gail
