Croatian and Slovenian folk tales
I am a children's librarian in Indianapolis. We are doing a promotion with the Indiana Pacers NBA basketball team where team members will read stories to children on our "Call-A-Story" phone line. Two team members who would like to participate are from Croatia and Slovenia. We would love to find some short folktales from their cultures which they could read (in English) but have had no success.
I have also done some web searching with no sucess. Any ideas?

Just an idea
What a great idea and how wonderful that the players wish to participate. If you have access to the players you might ask THEM what their favorite fairy tales were when they grew up and then find copies of those fairytales for them to read. Remember most of the basketball players are college-educated, so assume that they have some literary knowledge - especially about folklore and tales from their childhood.
Also, are how are you searching? You may wish to look for fairytales using other historic geographic names for the regions, i.e. Yugoslavia, Austria-Hungary, Pannonia (for old myths), and alternate spellings (Slavonia).

One more thought on this
Also, many of the players are also parents and may read favorite stories to their children - another angle to try to match the players with the tales.

Good idea on the alternate forms of name, Jess. I'll try those, too.
I'm not the one in direct contact with the players, but my impression is that they don't have anything with them that would help. (maybe they can't translate the ones they know? Not sure. I'll ask more.). And they are both only 21 or 22 and are not parents yet.

Just a name
You wouldn't necessarily have to have the whole story - just a title would help. Then you can search for a translation.
Sorry I am not familiar with the players on the Pacers, so I wasn't sure of their ages/family status.

A friend of mine is from Croatia and lived in Germany for eight years, then moved to the US. I know many Croatians have spent time in Germany. If your basketball player has, he may well know German fairy tales, i.e., Grimm. My friend loved the Grimm stories and that was always one of her favorite things to talk about while she was learning English.
