The Changeling---For Kate
Kate,

In all of my archiving and reading of past posts, I found myself challenged to find the particular book, "The Changeling," you have been looking for. I did a search in the Library of Congress and found some results which may or may not help you.

My first instinct is that the book you want is "The Changeling" by Zilpha Keatley Snyder, a well-known author who has been reprinted often in the last few years, especially her "The Egypt Game." She wrote "The Changeling" in 1970. The first edition was illustrated by Alton Raible and the only description I could find was this:

"Had it not been for the firm belief of two young girls that one of them was a changeling, their lives would have been very different."

Snyder's "The Changeling" is out of print currently, but I am sure you can get it through interlibrary loan or perhaps find a used copy through www.abe.com. Also, you might want to look it up on Amazon.com because there are several reviews that might give clues in helping you identify the book. For example, the main characters names are Martha and Ivy. It is apparently a book beloved by many.

I found a few other titles printed between 1950 and 1972 which also look promising, but I couldn't get descriptions. They are:

Personal Name: Jenkins, Robin, 1912-
Main Title: The changeling.
Published/Created: London, Macdonald [1958]
Description: 208 p. 21 cm.

Personal Name: Mayne, William, 1928-
Main Title: The changeling.
Published/Created: New York, Dutton [1963, c1961]
Description: 152 p. illus. 22 cm.

Personal Name: Anderson, Mary Désirée, 1902-
Main Title: The changeling Niobid / by Mary D. Anderson.
Published/Created: London : Chatto & Windus, 1969.
Description: 239 p. ; 21 cm.

Personal Name: Sinclair, Jo, 1913-
Main Title: The changelings [by Jo Sinclair [pseud.]
Published/Created: New York, McGraw-Hill [1955]
Description: 323 p. 21 cm.

Hope this helps!

P.S. The Changeling---For Kate
I did check ABE and about 30 copies of the book are available in the $50.00 range. Apparently, this is a popular book with that price. Let me know if it is the right one.

Thanks!
Got your email and saw this post--I'm just replying here because, here I am . . . thank you so much, because that may indeed be the one. I probably read the one I am thinking of around 1972, in fact, so I would be surprised if it isn't. Martha and Ivy sound familiar, too.

I'll get right on it. I think I could probably find one at Powell's--hopefully for less than $50--they seem to often have excellent prices. But the library may get me a copy too (I have to admit this is one book I must eventually own, though.) I hadn't known about ABE until now, so thanks for that info too.

The theme of this post is: thanks. So much. That was very thoughtful of you.

Re: Thanks!
You're welcome. I hope it's the one! I have been hunting down some of my past favorite books and it is always a joy to find an old friend again.

Books
Heidi,

Yes--me too. This one especially. I can just picture it with its hard green cover. But I've never found it anywhere, and started to think I was making it up. I'm keeping my fingers crossed this one's it.

Which books are you hunting for? I have been reading childhood favorites lately.

Re: Books
Oh wow -- I haven't thought of that book in years. Ivy and Martha used to hang out in the woods, correct? And Ivy loved to dance, and eventually ran away to join the ballet? I adored that book as a kid. I can even picture the green cover.

Yes
That's the one, with the green cover, the woods, the ballet, etc! I devoured it over and over in the school library.

Re: Yes
Hello Kate,

I have actually been looking for books for several years now. A favorite as a young adult was "Greensleeves" and by Eloise Jarvis McGraw that I found through ABE. The biggest problem is finding books that I don't remember the title, author or anything. I can remember where they were in the library so I can roughly remember which letter the author's last name begins with. That is sad. And most of them were not necessarily "great" books, but ones that were perfect for me at the right time. Fortunately, I have been buying most of the books as I go along and discover I love them. My library started at a young age and it continues to grow.

There is also a picture book about a huge family of bears waking up in the middle of winter to enjoy snow, Christmas, and other winter fun that my brother and sister devoured and eventually destroyed through too many readings. I would love to get it for my brother's wedding this summer, but I have never come close to identifying it.

I am so glad that your "Changeling" book does appear to be Snyder's. I also saw some mentions of green covers on some of the listings on ABE, so you should be able to get the same edition if the price is right.
