More Comics
My friend Shaenon Garrity, who draws the awesome mad-science strip *Narbonic* (www.narbonic.com), posted this on her site today, and I thought it might appeal to some members of this board:
"You are hereby ordered to enjoy Amy Unbounded, an amazing little (one-half page size) comic
book that has me rejoicing in its very existance. I am utterly not into the minicomics scene, but I've
fallen more deeply in love with this set of photocopied, hand-stapled ashcans than with any other
comic since Bone. Honestly. Amy is a little girl with a hyperactive imagination living in the medieval
kingdom of Goredd. Her father is a weaver, her mother a barbarian clockmaker. Goredd has a
queen, banished knights, and the ocassional dragon (in human guise), but it's not your standard
fairytale kingdom; it's a solid, living place, with its own history, literature, legal system, and popular
music. The artwork is fair to middling in the early issues, then gradually develops a surer line and
hints of medieval woodcuts. All of my Ren Faire-going friends from college (you know who you are)
will love this even more than I do, but so will anyone who enjoys a plain good story. How can I
explain it? Okay, manga fans: you remember how Maison Ikkoku started out as a goofy little
comedy about a would-be college student, and by the time it got to the last volume you were
laughing and crying your eyes out more than you ever thought you would at a stupid comic book?
Well... read Amy all the way through to the issue "In Her Eyes", and I think you'll grok my
enthusiasm. "
