hi
I'm looking for a feminist or p.c. version for "the peid piper of hamlin". I also need a psychological interpretation of this fairy tale, can you help me? please?

Red as Blood ...
In the collection of short stories, _Red as Blood: Tales From the Sisters Grimmer_, Tanith Lee opens with a version of the Pied Piper of Hamilton that has feminiest overtones, which also deals with issues of class (if that's what you mean by p.c.). Do you need to interpret the original or the retelling?

extra stuff
Hey Helen, I was just sitting here scratching my head trying to remember where that Tanith Lee version was! Great that you knew.

Here are a few other possibilities you may want to look into: if you are doing a straight pyschological interpretation you may want to try Bruno Bettelheim's "Uses of Enchantment." You should know that a lot of scholars don't particularly like Bettelheim--he's bit didactic--but it might give you some useful ideas if you are just starting out. The other person you might find interesting is Marie-Luise Von Franz: An introduction to the Interpretation of Fairy Tales." Both of these books will no doubt be in a decent library.

For fun you might want to look at the Pied Piper homepage! It's full of interesting stuff and lists a number of contemporary poems and operas and other links (including Dr. Ashliman's fairy tale link which gives versions of the Pied piper from all over the world.)

here's the homepage:
www.ims.uni-stuttgart.de/~jonas/pidpiper.html

here's Ashliman's page on the pied piper:
www.pitt.edu/~das/hameln.html

let me know if I've erred in typing the site addresses...I can be really lousy at that.
