Well, hmmm, there are faeries,
of course, which come in all sizes, including tiny. Being nature
spirits, some of them live in trees. Have you looked at the books
"Faeries" by Brian Froud and Alan Lee, and "Good
Faeries/Bad Faeries" by Brian Froud? You can also see some
of Brian's images on his web site: www.worldoffroud.com
And check out the exhibit of Green Man/Green Woman art on the Endicott
Studio site: www.endicott-studio.com/galgreen.html,
which has tree spirits of all sorts. Some of the Victorian fairy
painters, like John Anster Fitzgerald and Richard Doyle, painted
pictures of small fairies in trees and other nature settings. Try
these art books for images: Victorian Fairy Painting by Jeremy Maas,
and Fairies in Victorian Art by Christopher Wood. Or these web sites:

As for world mythology, I know there are faery-type creatures in Japan and the Phillipines that live in trees, and also Native American "little people," and probably tons of others, but I'm in the middle of move and all my reference books are packed up. When I can locate the mythology texts among all the boxes, I'll post a bit more info. Here are two good reference texts to check out: "Dictionary of Nature Myths: Earth, Sea, and Sky," by Tamra Andrews (Oxford University Press) and "The World Guide to Gnomes, Fairies, Elves and Other Little People" by Thomas Keightley (Random House). You might also be interested in "The Wisdom of Trees: Mystery, Magic, and Medicine" by Jane Gifford (Sterling).

In the Trees
Sorry,
I didn't reply because the only thing that came to mind for me was Calvino's "Baron of the Trees," which is not about tiny people living in them.
No doubt there are creatures in some tropical cultures that will fit your parameters--you're most likely to get such tales in places with tree canopies, i.e., rain forest cultures. But I don't know the tales well enough to just toss off a few, and don't have time to hunt them up for you. But I would be inclined to start with Africa, South America and maybe Indonesian cultures and see what turns up.

All,
I didn't respond to this post because between the peculiar question and the scatological user name I assumed it was a prank. An impression that was confirmed for me by the second post which attempted to insult us all for not replying. It was not modesty on the part of the user to type an ambiguous insult, but a fundemental ignorance of the fact that the board's program automatically garbbles certain obscenities. Terri and Greg, you are so generous to give this poster the benefit of the doubt. But I refuse to answer anyone who insults me and everyone else on this board in such a rude manner.

No problem my friend. This may be the problem that email sometimes is so flat it's hard to tell when someone is being straight up or not. One of the reasons a board like this is so productive is because people are really nice and willing to help--even though most of us are incredibly busy doing so many other things.
how about giving us a bit more information on your project? What sort of artistic event is it? More information might inspire other people to respond.

THE PROJECT!!!!!!
Well, in fact the information I'm looking for is related to a project my Univeristy started. An open air exposition is being held in May in France near an tiny lake. My project consists of making little doors, windows and bridges, which are then attached to the tree, but the windows are broken, the doors are nailed, and everything has to look like it was old and shabby and that noone's living there anymore. This project has as theme: space (habitation). my point is to create space in the spectators imaginary,in which the beings, who lived in those treehouses, revive. These "houses" will practically not be seen: so as to hold up the mystery and discovery. For the project folder I would be pleased if I could join in it some real tales about tiny people living in trees, that would make the whole thing more believable to my tutors. little people in trees
There are lots of French tales about little people living in trees in the book The Great Encyclopedia of Faeries by Pierre Dubois, who is an expert on French and Breton folklore. The book was originally published in a French edition and is easily available in Europe. I think you'll find it has lots of useful information for you, and some good pictures too.
