Need REALLY help on this one... Has anybody seen the episode of "Buffy - The vampire slayer" where a group called "The Gentlemen" stole all voices and needed to get seven hearts? Only the scream of the "princess" could defeat them. In this episode it was said that those guys are from a fairy tale. Does anybody know this tale, its name, the author or anything that can help me? Thanks.

The Smiling Gentlemen You know when that episode first aired, the board was swamped with that question (as well as admiration for that particular episode which I thought was fabulous!). But I can't remember that any one was able to pin point a particular original tale. It seems to me that it really was just the genuis of Whedon to take the tropes of fairy tales and reweave them into an original piece...but oh so close that we believe it must be part of some tradition.
There may have been suggestions that bits and pieces of it came from a variety of unrelated stories...but as I recall no one could find one tale that was especially inclusive of all the cool bits.
I wonder though if this isn't one of those FAQ's on a buffy Website? Maybe there would be more there on its particular creation. The episode garnered quite a bit of praise and attention.

Gentlemen thieves There's a fairy-tale novel by the German writer Michael Ende called "Momo" in which characters referred to as "the Grey Gentlemen" steal time. This is not precisely what you describe, of course, but the designation of the "Gentlemen" as thieves within society is analogous. The novel has been translated into English and could be a possible source. Just a thought.
