fairy tale poetry
This seems to have been a constant topic around here lately, and I just ran across a relevant reference. While doing my reading about confessional poetry, I ran across a reference to Anne Sexton's _Transformations_ (1971) "which offers macabre reappraisals of familiar fairy tales." More than likely most of you folks are already aware of this work, but perhaps it'll be new to someone else as well. :-) Thoughts or comments?

Sexton
Laura,
It's a terrific collection of poems. I used her "Rapunzel" poem in particular as a starting point for one of the stories I wrote for Terri's anthology series. She really finds the raw nerve at the center of many tales.

Re: Sexton
Anne Sexton's work was also a source of inspiration (along with Terri's anthologies) for my work on my thesis. Anne Sexton's poetry illuminates the idea that we can find a way to relate in a deep, personal way to ancient tales and therefore find a connection to the timelessness of our world. I'm also currently reading Joseph Campbell's "The Power of Myth" which discusses the importance of mythology to society and how we can benefit by reinvigorating myth and folklore today. In our current era, we have lost touch with the spiritual base that our ancient tales are built upon: by re-connecting to them, we find a universal link that goes beyond culture, technology and religion.

Whoo! That got preachy! But it just shows you how inspirational thoughful work based on mythology and fairy tales can be!

Joseph Campbell
I agree; Joseph Campbell has some great thoughts and insights on the importance of myth and legend to society. (His comments on why Star Wars was so popular ave very interesting.)

If you're interested, there's a great discussion group in Yahoo Clubs called the Joseph Campbell Mythology Group. Unlike most clubs, this one actually has a lot of intellectuals and their discussions run on a level I wouldn't have expected from a Yahoo Club. (I am a bit biased against Yahoo, as you can tell.)

Re: fairy tale poetry
Laura, have you come across "Trail of Stones," a collection of fairy tale poetry by Gwen Strauss? It's a lovely collection. I also *highly* recommend Carol Ann Duffy's latest, "The World's Wife," which is filled with myth and fairy tale references.

Another Recommendation
Nancy Willard's poetry uses some fairy tale imagery, lots of mythic bases, and is just generally full of magic. I adore the collection, "Swimming Lessons," but "Household Tales of Moon and Water" is also excellent.
