angela carter
um, hello. *waves timidly* i feel really stupid posting here because i'm not half as well versed as some of you are regarding all things mythic and folklorish. i've always had a fascination for fairy tales, and my interest in them really grew after i bought "ruby slippers, golden tears" about a year ago. this is one of the very *few* decent websites on fairy tales that i've found... it's either that or i'm not looking hard enough. but in any case, i've been lurking around here for some time and i hope that doesn't creep anyone out.

and this is a totally random question. i've suddenly developed an unhealthy obsession with wanting to read an angela carter book... ANY angela carter book, after i browsed through some copies in a bookstore. i've also been looking her up online and found so many reviews and papers written on her and the way people DESCRIBE her stories is enough to make my mouth water... i can't wait to read them. so, the problem is, books over here (malaysia) cost a fortune, and at the moment, i'm looking for recommendations as to the ONE essential angela carter book that an "angela-newbie" should buy. am i asking for too much? *grin*

i just love reading your discussions, and i know that most of you, heck, all of you, are very passionate on the subject of fairy tales and books... and i thought that this would be the best place to ask, and well as read your individual opinions on her books. i'm just... really obsessed with acquiring her books at the moment.

and also, maybe some recommendations on the "essential" books that a fairy-tale lover should own/read/beg/borrow/steal? i'm sorry if this topic has been covered before... if it has, then i'll just quietly slink away and search through the board archives. there is a discussion on tanith lee in the archives, but unfortunately the link didn't take me anywhere so that was a bit of a bummer.

basically, i'm just looking for lots and lots of recommendations, if you will.

Re: angela carter
Welcome to the board!

My first essential dose of Angela Carter was "The Bloody Chamber" which is a collection of short stories based on fairy tales. It is perhaps the best way to start off.

As for the other books, well, that is a topic we have discussed and debated and added to over the past year or so. It also really depends on what you are wanting--traditional tales or modern interpretations, for example. I believe there is a long discussion archived in March or April of "must haves."

Thanks for the comments on my site, too. It is far from perfect and the demands on my time continue that problem, but I have tried to keep it at least one of the most useful!

Carter & Lee ...
_The Bloody Chamber_ is definately a wonderful work ... I'm not certain, but I think that there is a recent anthology of her work that contains all of those stories, and others besides (I'll look into it when I get a chance). As for Tanith Lee ... she has a lovely informative website (rather like Terri's Editorial pages) at www.tanithlee.com
and (you may have already seen this in the archives) there's an absolutely wonderful new book out by Mavis Haut concerning Lee's work. Has anyone else seen it yet?

Re: Carter
I believe the name of the Carter anthology is Burning Your Bridges which includes The Bloody Chamber, more short stories and essays.

As for other books, maybe borrowing fairy tale anthologies from the library and finding authors whose stories you enjoy would be a good starting place?

Burning Your Boats
Close! It is actually Burning Your Boats, and it includes all of Carter's short fiction (including The Bloody Chamber stories). It is in paperback, which will bring the cost down somewhat, and it's far cheaper to buy this compilation than the individual collections separately.

If you're interested in her novels, I recommend beginning with The Magic Toyshop, and Love (her first book, I believe, and really novella-length).

Carter
Sorry to be the voice of dissent! The Bloody Chamber would be a wonderful place to start, but I also reccomend The Infernal Desire Machines of Dr. Hoffman, simply because I love that book so much!
There is also an anthology of Carter's journalism called Expletives Deleted.
