Poohka tales anyone?
Posting for a friend- any ideas?

Hey ya....

We recently got a friendly request for titles of books which involve the Irish shapeshifting critters known as the poohka (or any number of other spelling variants). The only one I could come up with off the top of my head was Emma Bull's War for the Oaks. Can anyone else suggest a title or 3?? Folklore or fiction, anything would be great. Thanks!

At Swim
Kerrie,

There's a wonderfully weird comic novel called "AT SWIM TWO BIRDS" written by Flan O'Brien about a young Irish student who is writing a novel that sort of takes over the narrative (actually he's writing two--a western and an Irish folklore sort of thing and the two collide, threaten to kill the young novelist so the characters can write their own tale!). There is a hilarious Poohka in the novel--a feisty irritable little creature. It's really a strange novel--but very funny and just when you think it's going to fall apart O'Brien pulls it together effortlessly.

Terri's off to France right now, but I'm sure she'd have a list at her fingertips!

Re: At Swim
Lewis Spence has some references to the Phooka in his wonderful book The Magic Arts in Celtic Britian. But perhaps more to the point, quite a few Thomas Croker (Fairy Legends and Traditions) stories feature the Phooka.

Harvey
Have you read/seen the play "Harvey." It is sort of a modern fairy tale, isn't it. Harvey is supposed to be a poohka.
