Apologies
To all:

This is just a quick apology for being so selfish lately, reading without writing.

I feel rather guilty taking in all this conversation without offering anything in return for so long. But I will return soon enough. (I finally delivered my final novel manuscript to the publisher last week, and can start being halfway human again. If I was to begin with, that is.)

Re: Apologies
Hello Kate!

Please don't apologize. We all go through it. I feel like I have been doing it for months myself!

Congrats on your manuscript.

Novel apology
Kate,
I can't think of why you should apologize for just having the time to read. Novels are all-consuming monsters. Congratulations on finishing yours.
As for reading here without writing, I go through days and days of feeling way too stupid to contribute, out of my depth, and far more interested in absorbing the information imparted by others. This is such a generous site.

Re: Novel apology
OK,

Now I feel confident enough to jump in. I have to admit to lurking for a while. Well, honestly I've been lurking obsessively for the past week or so. However I've been feeling too out of my depth and stupid to jump in, though the discussions are fascinating.

Hope I'll have something more substantial to contribute in the near future. Laura Mc

welcome!
Laura,

Wecome indeed. We are a pretty assorted bunch of folks here and the last thing any of us want to make someone else feel intimated. I have learned so much from this board over the last year and am always surprised by the breath as well as depth of information that comes across here, from writers, graduate students, undergrads and highschool kids that pop up with great questions. The more the merrier I say! (for example, Alex's question about the implications in the second marriages of stepmother tales in the posts on marriage below was a twist I had never considered--whole novels can be written from such interesting lines of inquiry!)

Kate,
Congratulations on finishing the novel!! After reading snippets about it on the board I am looking so forward to reading it. And welcome back.

Thanks
Thanks for all the kind words, everyone. I am very glad to be done with the novel, at last. It took me seven years. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to celebrate at all yet! I'll have to try harder to celebrate, though, you're right, Terri. I forgot about that. Thank you for reminding me. (Also, I was in Tucson last month doing the final revision, but I think you were overseas. I hope I was not wrong--was I?I will be back in July, in any case, for about two weeks.)

Of course the idea of people reading the book is terrifying. I got to 'hide' in the anthology. Got used to that place. I do look forward to hearing all of your reactions to the book, once it is out. (I don't think it's going to be very expensive, by the way. Just a trade paperback.)

And, I will jump into other dialogues when I feel less overwhelmed and stupid!

Re: Apologies
Kate,

Please don't worry about apologising, really. I've had the same thing happening these past few weeks--novels *are* monsters in their own way. The problem is that I've been spending time trying to write the novel and completely neglecting all those term papers I'm supposed to write...

Oooops.

Anyway, which story did you write in the anthology?

Re: Apologies
Kate: I've been back in Tucson since early January...and, alas, I'll be gone again in early June so I'll miss your next trip too. But if you come anytime before June, please let me know.

Kavita: Kate is the editor of the *terrific* anthology "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall" -- a collection of original essays by women writers (like A.S. Byatt, Margaret Atwood, Kathryn Davis, Chitra B. Divakaruni, etc.) on fairy tales. If you haven't read it yet, then many of us on this board can highly recommend it.
