the faerie principle ...
Yep, I noticed (I'm pretty sure that everyone did, after a while the eyes of fantasy-buffs automatically acclimate to spot the particular visual configuaration that signals the influence/presence of our heroes) but didn't want to cause discomfort ... or make the mistake of the dope in tales who gushes over the presence of a figure of faerie and drives him or her away. Does that make any sense?

Has anyone read A Trip to the Stars?
Heidi, I know what you mean. Besides, I'm already so overawed by having such a presence of writers on this forum (and writers whose work I respect) that half the time I'm paranoid and afraid to post, for fear I will say something stupid. <grin>
But, I wanted to mention a book. Has anyone read _A Trip to the Stars_ by Nicholas Christopher? It's not exactly a fantasy or fairy tale but, it has a lot of allusions and references and I enjoyed it enormously. In fact, it moved right up to my top five favorite books. Definitely a must have on a deserted island.
And also (since I don't think anyone's mentioned it yet) _The Ordinary Princess_ by M. M. Kaye. I found that book years ago, I must have been 10 years old, in a public library. I think it was a first edition (rare), and it had her beautiful full color illustrations. I am so glad I bought a copy before it went completely out of print.

...well, I did notice the screenname, but I'm still rather in denial that she's actually *on* this list. I was just rereading my half-ripped copy of "The Devil's Arithmetic" the other day and this would be far too much of a scary coincidence.

If you like _A Trip to the Stars_, then you've got to read his first novel, _Veronica_. It's a lyrical, beautiful, utterly surreal trip through some of the weirder and more intriguing portions of New York, liberally dusted with references to Tibetan spirituality, Renaissance astrology, and magic in general. Wonderful book. Wonderful *writer* - can't wait for his next.

I also want to add my voice to the welcome. We don't know each other (of course) but I edited an anthology called Mirror, Mirror on the Wall a couple of years ago that I wrote to you about. I think your invitation to contribute was one I never got a reply from--it would have been sent in, oh, 1994 or so though the book came out in 1998. I wonder if it ever made its way to you from your publisher (the only way I knew to get in touch with you then). I apologize if not. (And I'll take this opportunity to apologize again to all you amazing writers on the board, with whom I was not familiar then and failed to invite--I did so on an earlier string, but I feel I can never apologize enough.) In any case, nice to see you on the board, and thanks for all your fine work.
