Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
I was talking to some friends of mine about this movie a few nights ago, and none of us could figure out where they had found the story. We thought it was from a Chinese faery tale. If so, which one, and is it in print anywhere? Does anyone know?

Source?
Kavita,
I'm unaware of any fairy tale source for the film. My ignorance certainly doesn't mean there isn't one, but if so, I suspect it must be more than one. The story of the sword seems to be a separate tale from the mountain bandit, which seems to be a separate tale from the school in the mountains. Magic swords are so universal, though, I wouldn't be surprised to find that Ang Lee was thinking of Excalibur or something very obvious when working it out.

Re: Source?
The movie is based on a novel from the author Du Lu Wang as part of a five novel series.
Unfortunately I couldn't find a transaltion of the book (not even in German).
