archetypal pattern and symbolism in fairy tales I am looking at some archetypal pattern in snow white, cinderlla and in Grimm's fairy tales. I need some information on this pattern, if someone can suggest some book it will be great. I am also looking at symbolism too. if anyone got any resource pls let me know thanx! =)

Archetypal If it's Jungian studies you're after, you could try either of Marie Louise Von Franz's books, especially "Problems of the Feminine in Fairy Tales".

Re: Archetypal Another helpful Jungian book is Man and His Symbols which doesn't deal with fairy tales specifically, but has a lot of info on archetypes.

the dreaded name ... Hopefully it won't get me lynched, but there's always trusty Bruno Bettelheim. Love him or hate him, his book The Use of Enchantment was hugely influential and is a good jumping-off point. Be sure to look at it with a critical eye -- just because it's in print doesn't make it true! ;-)

Re: the dreaded name ... I also would suggest Joseph Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces as another good jumping-off point. He talks more about mythology, but he does also discuss fairy tales. Then there's also the feminist criticism of his work, which I have not read up on. So many books, so little time.

Bottigheimer Though her approach is sociohistorical and you are looking for archetypal interpretations, I would still recommend Ruth B. Bottigheimer's chapter on Cinderella (and other chapters as well) in GRIMMS' BAD GIRLS AND BOLD BOYS (Yale U., 1987) for an interesting scrutiny of the language of the tales.
You might find some material in there that applies to your archetypal approach.
You might also find some relevant material in SIX MYTHS OF OUR TIME by Marina Warner(Vintage, 1994), a very readable series of essays on originally written as BBC radio broadcasts.

Re: archetypal pattern and symbolism in fairy tales Gosh knows if you can find a copy, I've had mine since college some 18 years ago, but there is an excellent book I love to reread whenever the mood catches me. DEFINITELY jungian and deals with several examples, including snow white/rose red, rumpelstiltskin, and many others. The book is titled "Shadow and Evil in Fairytales" by M.L. Von Franz, (ML stands for Marie-Louise) and she has a list on the back of her other works which also look promising that I wish I had tracked down then. The publisher is Spring Publications in New York,
here are the isbn's of some of these books, all by ML Von Franz:
An Introduction to the Interpretation of fairy tales

Problems of the Feminine in Fairy Tales

Patterns of Creativity Mirrored in Creation Myths

Re: archetypal pattern and symbolism in fairy tales
I just checked amazon.com and
most of Marie-Louise's books are available there, obviously reprinted
in the last 5 years... the following looked like it might be exactly
what you are looking for. they each run around 12-15$ it appears,
so perhaps finding them at a library might be better if money is
a factor.
