hey
does anyone know of any plays with a fairytale or mythology theme. i've been asked to choose something to perform for my A/s drama course and i'm interested in that kind of thing. If possible it would need to have mainly female roles as the boys in my clas seem to have an aversion to acting and its hard to play cross gender roles.
Anyway if you could tell me of any possible scripts or authors i would be grateful.

You could try looking at Gozzi's plays. He is an Italian who wrote in the 1700's but the plays were mostly taken from fairy tale like stories. They are quirky and weird, use masks ...you didn't say how old the students were...so maybe it won't be appropriate. Try "King Stag".

I don't know of any plays myself,
but Samuel French's and Baker's Plays both have websites that list
their impressive colections. Smauel French's is at www.samuelfrench.com
. I think the other is www.bakersplays.com . You should also check
the bibliography at www.teleport.com/~cdeemer...plays.html
The problem is that these only list titles, not content -- but there are books that might be able to help you in this.

One thing you may want to try is all or part of Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare. You can even play around with the single sex acting part, since most (if not all) of the performers in his time were male. Try it with an all female cast, it could be really fun. (I did props and costumes for a readers theater collection of scens from his plays, including one where a woman was pretending to be a man (actually in the play). It can be tough, but fun.
My highschool's senior drama class also put together their own show, choosing their favorite fables and converting them into workable scripts- came out rather nice!
When I took Shakespeare at Simmons college, the professor was in a play called "The Bacchai" at Radcliffe. You may want to look at that or other epic poems, like the Illiad and the Odyssey.
