McCaughrean
Terri and all,
I expect I'm coming late to this party, but are you familiar with the works of British writer Geraldine McCaughrean? Her adult novel, THE MAYPOLE, was recommended to me, I hunted up a copy and am truly wowed by it (I'm maybe halfway through). While it isn't a fairy tale per se--it's based on the ancient ballad from Percy's Reliques, called Little Musgrave--most of her writing has been for children and includes the Arabian Nights, Canterbury Tales and other fantasy works.
Curiously reading,
Greg

McCaughrean
She also has a new picture book of Beauty and the Beast due on the shelves any day now.

I first read her "Pack of Lies" several years ago for a workshop at Simmons. I've been following her work ever since...

Re: McCaughrean
Her young adult novels and short stories are almost always a treat -- Pack of Lies was one of my favourite because of the role of the storyteller. She has published countless collections of myths aimed at young readers that are often lavishly illustrated.

thanks for the recommendation
No, I don't know her work. I'm going to have to track it down now!

Finding her
Terri,
I discovered when I went looking that many of her books are out of print or never were in print in the US (you'll have an advantage traveling to the UK). I found "Maypole" through Alibris, which listed an assortment of others. We may be neck-and-neck trying to acquire them. I think you'll love her style.

Best,
Greg
