Spining base material into gold
I would like help to know if there are any folk tales of India that describe turning base material into gold, either by spinning or some other means? Rumplestiltskin is the western example where he spins straw into gold. Is there a similar story in Indian folk tales.
Thanks

indian tales Jana,
I don't mean to ignore to question--I have a note to myself and a couple of titles that I used once on Indian folktales--I've just been swamped with other stuff this week. I'll take a look over Thanksgiving and if it isn't too late for you (are you working on a paper?) I'll post sometime next week!

Spinning into gold! Midori,
No, it won't be too late. I'll appreciate it if you look for us when Thanksgiving is over. Do you know where I can get some pictures of Rumplestiltskin while he is sitting at the spinning wheel, spinning gold from straw?
Thanks.

Spinning into gold Midori,
Have you found-out anything about a tale that is similar to Rumplestiltskin, in Indian folk tales? Do you know where I can get some good drawings or pictures of Rumplestiltskin at the wheel, spinning gold?
Regards

some help Jana,
my collection of Indian tales isn't particularly large so I was unable to find something that fit the bill exactly. However, if you have access to a good university library, you might try browsing through the following titles, which are a bit like the Indian version of the Grimms tales..."Jataka Tales" ed. by E.B. Cowell or "Jataka Tales" selected and retold by H. T. Francis and E.J. Thomas. Or, the "Panchatantra" translated by Arthur W. Ryder.
As for illustrations, good heavens you have a fabulous resource
right here at your fingertips. Take a look at our illustrious Webmistress's
site "Surlalune Fairy Tales" at www.surlalunefairytales.com.
Scroll down to the Rumplestilskin link and enjoy browsing the collection of images Heidi has posted. Including some of Rumplestilskin spinning.
good luck

Rumplestiltskin Midori,
Thanks for your good help. You gave me exactly what I need. I have Panchatantra, that was the first place I looked for a similar story. I'll try the others you suggested.
