Speaking of illustrations....
I'm curious as to what everyone thinks of Cindy Sherman's photographs for "Fitcher's Bird". I saw a few at a CS retrospective last year and liked them very much.

That's funny--I'm actually trying to get these photographs on a set of slides for a class I'm teaching this fall. I'm talking to an archive in New York next week. If I manage to get them, I'll let you know. I think these were part of a series of fairy tale photographs Sherman produced on commission for The New Yorker (in the mid-1980s?) which they declined to print because they found them too gory. Am I wrong on that?
I like the series a lot, myself, and in fact often use her work in classes (particulary the untitled film stills).
I do know the fairy tale series is available in a book, or rather in a program catalogue. Of course I don't have the reference right here, so I shouldn't have posted this! Sorry. I'll write again later this afternoon with the proper reference, unless someone else does first.

Sherman Correction/More Information
Sorry--I just made two mistakes!
The larger series was actually for Vanity Fair. (Again, I think they didn't publish them, but am not sure). It was in 1985; at least I got the time right! I still can't find my exhibition catalogue from a show of them several years ago in New York, but am trying. A good excuse to rummage in my boxes, instead of work, this afternoon.
The Fitcher's Bird photographs were commissioned for a story book published by Spalding in 1994.

Sherman Again
Well, shoot. I just found one of these, and my Fitcher's Bird book is actually published by Rizzoli, not Spalding. (It's way out of print but I know one can find copies of it online, very easily.)
Just call me Little Miss Mistake Maker today.

I absolutely *adore* Sherman's work. As Kate says, the fitcher's bird photographs were commissoned for a story book in 1994 and were...ahem... not quite what the publisher had in mind. Sherman's retrospective was held year (there was a catalogue but I couldn't afford to buy it) and travelled to New York, LA and the MCA here in Sydney, I believe. I think I kept a few bits and pieces from it and I should be able to get my mits on a copy of the catalogue at the library (So I could scan the photographs and email them to you, Terri).
It was a truly amazing exhibition- fitcher's bird, Sherman renacting scenes from film noir and horror, a madonna squirting milk out or her breast, plastic dolls sprawled across industrial waste lands- a kaleidoscope. And there were videos of Sherman at work. One featured footage of Sherman walking around a doll shop, rubbing her hands in glee and murmuring "Wow, look at all this sick stuff! A child bride- how nice!".
Oh, by the way, I managed to pick up a copy of The Innamorati and
Mirror, Mirror at long last the other day and I am enjoying both
immensely.

Sherman photographs
These sound absolutely delicious -- and I can't believe I've missed them all this time! Speaking of perverse and wonderful fairy tale art, do you folks know the paintings and etchings of Paula Rego? She's a contemporary British artist, born and raised in Portugal, and she done some wonderful dark, strange, amazing work on fairy tales, nursery rhymes, Peter Pan, etc. There are a few books out of her work, and Marina Warner has written about her (apparently they're good friends). A man here in my village owns three of her etchings, and I'm absolutely green with envy. He bought them years ago, before she started exhibiting places like the Tate and her prices went through the roof....

No, I haven't heard of Paula Rego, but I'll be sure to check her out.
