African sprites?
Hello,

Does anyone know of online sources for information about names (and descriptions) of African fairies, pixies, goblins and other sprites?

I will thank you now for all advice and suggestions.

African oral narratives
There are a couple of wonderful sources you can look at but probably the most fun (and the most recently published) is by Harold Scheub and is called a "Dictionary of African Mythology". Another maybe to look at collections, one by Harold Courlander ("Tales of Yoruba Gods and Heroes"-mostly west african material) comes immediately to mind and one of my favorite collections from Leo Frobenius, "African nights. Black Erotic Folktales".

Africa is a huge continent and with a lot of different traditions to draw on. The tricksters are different from West Africa to East Africa, from Islamic traditions to Congo. But there is tons to find!
Harold's book should get you moving in the right direction. If you have access to a library I can also highly reccomend his scholarly annotated bibliography "African Oral Narratives, Proverbs, Riddles, Poetry and Song". In this he gives the references for all kinds of published materials with a few comments on whats in the collection and the quality of the collection.

hope this helps!

African Sprites
Jan Knappert's 'African Mythology' is pretty useful too. It's a fairly good A-Z, but with such an immense continent, there's sure to be stuff missed out.
