American Fairy Tale illustrators
Hi everyone,
I'm new here and am thrilled to have discovered this great website. I am a graduate student doing my thesis on the history of illustration in fairytales, folk tales, and nursery rhymes. While I do need to include the extensive history of non-American illustrators like Rackham and Dulac, I am not having all that much luck finding as many accomplished American illustrators that I like who are known for their fairy tale illustrations. I will be sure to include Parrish and Jessie Wilcox Smith and KY Craft. Can anyone tell me who else might be good to research? I would love to find an illustrator who is to fairy tales what Gris Grimly is to Nursery rhymes.....just to add some variety in there. I also cannot find someone other than Parrish who did Arabian nights or stories from that book.
Thanks so much!!
Tisha

Re: American Fairy Tale illustrators
Tisha Marie,

Are you just looking for Golden Age illustrators? Because the Americans begin to make a greater impact with fairy tale illustration more recently. They aren't in the SurLaLune illustration gallery due to copyright issues, but off the top of my head, some important illustrators include:

Paul Zelinsky
Kinuko Craft (has lived in U.S. since the 60s)
Ruth Sanderson
Mercer Meyer
Trina Schart Hyman
James Marshall
Jerry Pinkney
Steven Kellogg (for American folktales especially)

Earlier illustrators from mid-20th century include:

Marcia Brown

There's also Paul Galdone, another naturalized American, but I'm not a big fan.

For Golden Age, there is Elenore Plaisted Abbott, one of my favorites. As well as Margaret Evans Price and Milo Winter.

illustrators
The following website has women illustrators of children's books. www.ortakales.com/Illustr...index.html

If you click on the links button, there are many links to illustrators. Bud Plant's site includes many different types of illustrators but is worth a look.
