Amazon's Kindle
Just spent part of the morning procrastinating and reading about Amazon's Kindle. Not quite up to the price risk yet, but it does read as though Amazon thought ahead on a lot of technical needs and wants. My husband, not an avid book reader, is salivating over it. Has anyone seen one in person yet? I wonder if it lives up to the hype.

I'm a paper reliant girl myself, but it would be nice for long trips when toting enough books to keep me reading is very ineffective. I hate reading on PDAs and laptops, so I wonder if this screen is really all that much better.

Re: Amazon's Kindle
It would take a lot to wean me from paper, but I certainly haven't seen a screen as good as those Amazon is showing for the Kindle - it looks pleasantly readable. It might really take off after a few kinks get worked out, though right now the price is a bit hefty - think of all the "real" books a person could buy for $400.00!

My worry is that the Kindle may only read Kindle e-books, purchased from the Kindle store; it looks as though it won't work with other e-book formats, and so far it seems like people have have been having trouble with pdfs. This could be limiting for readers who enjoy reading a lot of non-main stream works, but could also raise some substantial problems for libraries (along the lines of current audio books that many can't check out because they can't listen to them on an iPod, or because they can only listen to them on an iPod).

It seems possible that, after a few more decades, paper books might become luxury items, purchased only by dedicated readers who love the smell of paper and ink, the sound of pages turning, the sight of a line they scribbled in a margin when they first read a book...
