Trying to locate a tale
This has been really really bugging me for ages so I hope you guys can help me out. I think I had this on an audio tape of fairytales when I was younger, probably in the early 90s.
I can't remember much of the plot, but there was a girl (not a princess, as far as I can remember) who ends up marrying some sort of beast and going to live in his castle. Some time later she has to go home for some reason, and he gives her a ring that changes colour so she will know that he is OK without her. When it goes black it means he is dying. She goes home and has to stay until she has finished making a (wedding?) dress, but her mother and sisters don't want her to leave, so every night they secretly unpick the stitches she has made during the day.
I can't remember how the story finishes, but could anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Re: Trying to locate a tale
It sounds like a version of Beauty and the Beast. Could this have been an audio-tape of a full length book of the tale? And if not, were there other tales on that tape that you remember--it'd help us narrow the version for you.

Re: Trying to locate a tale
I'm almost certain that it wasn't a full length book, just a short story. I think there was also a version of The Goose Girl on the tape, but I had so many fairytale tapes when I was younger I may just be mixing them up! I live in the UK so it would have been an English tape.

Trying to locate a tale
I just checked "The Wonderful Sheep" in Lang from Cabinet des Fees. Stitches in a wedding dress and a ring that changed color were not mentioned, but would have fitted into the story very well. Some of those CdF stories were abridged to fit Lang.

However the heroine was not actually married to the sheep, she just took refuge with him after a Snow White huntsman beginning (after a King Lear sort of quarrel with her father).
