need some help picking a book for a 10 yr old boy
Please help us I need to pick out a good book for a 10 yr old boy. We have to pick a bookk that is a Realistic Fiction book. It need to be around 100 pages. I have a child that doesnt like to read it takes him a while but he gets through it. He is in 4th grade and it is for a Book Report. I was hoping since it was a choice on what he gets to read it will be more interesting for him. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. He is not into sports but does like bmx racing, Karate, paintball, starwars, hunting.

Thanks
Kourtney

Perhaps The Cay by Theodore Taylor? Or Gary Paulsen's Hatchet. Or something by Andrew Clements (although some of his have a fantasy element, not technically realistic fiction) or Sachar's Holes.

Here's a guide to books for reluctant readers, put together by a library:

Books for Reluctant Readers

I was going to suggest Avi and Jerry Spinelli, as well. Your school or public librarian should be able to help your son pick out books he'll enjoy that are appropriate to his reading level.

Good luck!

Re: need some help picking a book for a 10 yr old boy
he might be old enough for the anamorph books... about kids who morph into animalls in order to save something good.

I would recommend also, reading to him a cliffhanger at night, just whomever his caregiver is and he, for a while, a page or three every night. I love 'the neverending story,' which I just discovered, and it is about a ten y ear old boy... Bastian, who is not so hot at school, but is a natural of heart and soul and a storyteller to boot in his own way and who by 'falling into a book,' falls into a land called Phantesia which is dying from 'the great nothing' and Bastian/ his alter-ego, must take on all sorts of monsters and befriends strange beings ... I think it can break into cliffhangers easily... I have grandsons... and am in the midst of reading it to them... even though they have seen the movie... the movie is quite different I hear, from the book, and frankly such intimacy of reading to a boy child, soon to be a manchild, will never be lost on your 10 year old boy who you so dearly care about

with kindest regards,
cpe
