looking for name of old woman demon
i had it, lost it somewhere in a sea of notes

it is an old woman who attaches herself to people's backs and wont let go, it, i think is native american, maybe a tribe with an m or w in the name, but maybe her name begins with w or m. I keep wanting to say 'wiki-something or other....but that cant be right. Oh sigh. If anyone can help I would appreciate, I have gone through so many books and cannot find where I got the original note.
thank you for any help you can give.

with kindest regards,
cpe

Re: looking for name of old woman demon
Is this to do with sleep paralysis or 'old hag' syndrome, where the sleeper feels as if there is an entity sitting on them and they are unable to move or breath?. Each culture has a different name or character for this phenomenom....

Re: looking for name of old woman demon
that's a good question katherine, i certainly think they are in the same realm, but this one, I think, as I recall it, is attached to the back of a person. I know of the creature that springs from the grave in Mary Culhane, but this is a mythic figure, not a fairytale or 'religious' one, from, I believe, Native American mythos

say more about 'old hag' syndrome. Is this like an incubus or succabus that is imagined as a force that aggresses upon a sleeping person, but in the form of an old woman?

Re: looking for name of old woman demon
It's possible that it's a local legend, or at least one that's only found in a particular region.

Re: looking for name of old woman demon
I've heard this story--many years ago, at a Native American storytelling festival.

I wanted to say wendigo, but on closer inspection that doesn't look right.

Re: looking for name of old woman demon
I though of Windigo too, but I've never heard it described as an old woman. The story I heard made the creature out as invisible and mysterious. If anything, it seemed to appear as wind.

Re: looking for name of old woman demon
Oooh, happy to help!

I was a pretty small child (maybe 8 or 9) when our class was invited to attend a Native American storytelling festival at Iowa State University. I remember very little about it, although I believe they told a lot of what we'd consider ghost stories. And I've kept with me a vivid image of a haglike old woman clinging to the back of her victim. I can't say for sure if the storytellers gave this character the name of wendigo, but (at least until I looked it up the other night, to check my memory against!) the word wendigo did conjure up something sinister and female for me.

I also have vague memories of a box in a corner of a dark cabin, and yellow eyes looking out of the night. These could be from the same story... or something altogether different. Apparently I was so spooked I never bothered to look deeper into the lore!
