English translation of Nursery and Household Tales
Would anyone know of an English translation of The brothers Grimm Nursery and Household Tales Volumes 1 and 2 (1812-1815). I am researching a project and would like to read the stories in their earliest form. I have looked at Amazon and have found snippets on the web but no complete translation. Many Thanks.

Re: English translation of Nursery and Household Tales
No, Margret Hunt's translation is of a later edition. What I am looking for is a complete translation of volumes one and two in English. There are subtle differences in later editions and some stories were dropped. Also in later editions the Grimm's edited out some of the spicier aspects that made the originals unsuitable for children. Thanks for you help.

Re: English translation of Nursery and Household Tales
The short answer to this is that you aren't going to find accurate English translations of the entire two volumes of Grimms in the earliest editions because they don't exist.

Overall, English translators in the 19th century edited the tales as they saw fit regardless of which edition of Grimms they were using. The Margaret Hunt translation is one of the most accurate, but she still took liberties with the text, even in her translation of the extensive notes. Edgar Taylor's 1923 translation took several liberties and cannot be used to judge the Grimms' text. He also didn't translate the entire collection.

Recommended further reading on the subject:

Haase, Donald, editor. The Reception of Grimms' Fairy Tales: Responses, Reactions, Revisions. Detroit: Wayne State Univ. Press, 1993.

Tatar, Maria M. The Hard Facts of the Grimms' Fairy Tales. Princeton: Princeton University, 1987.

Zipes, Jack. The Brothers Grimm: From Enchanted Forests to the Modern World. New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2002.

And of course the 3rd edition of Zipes' translation has translations of some of the earliest versions of the popular tales.
