Help! need a fairy tale to animate
I am looking fo a fairy tale to animate for my master's thesis film. I must also comeplete a written component and have an idea of what I'd like to say through the work; for that reason I am mostly interested in love stories. I'd love something that is non-western or at least not very common. Ideally, the story should be one I could tell in about 2 minutes and hopefully without dialogue. (I generally find silent animated shorts more apealing than the "talkies"!) Do any of you have a favorite tale you'd like to see animated, or that you feel fits what I'm looking for? I've spent a LOT of time researching and can't say I've found that special tale, yet. Please help!!!

Re: Help! need a fairy tale to animate
I think the Japanese fairy-tale, "The Crane Wife" would be a good choice, given your criteria. The story itself is dead simple: a poor farmer rescues a crane from a snare, later he and his mother take in a young woman who appears at their door and the farmer marries her. She proves an expert weaver who makes fine cloth, which they sell to raise the family out of poverty. Her only condition is that no one watch her weave. Naturally, he's overcome with curiosity and spies on her, learning that his wife is the crane he rescued earlier, transformed (she must weave in her true form). Once her secret is known, she must leave him, and in the last scene flies away.

There are many variations on this basic story. You'd want to read a few to put the best synthesis together for what you need, but most of them could be told fairly easily with visuals alone in a short running time.

The Spindle, the Shuttle, and the Needle might fit in those time constraints.

As an extension of Richard's post...The Decemberist's album The Crane Wife, is based off of that story, if you want music in the background...Try the song: The Crane Wife 1 & 2 :)

I would also recommend Japanese Fairy Tales...
... specifically I thought of The Snow Wife, which would provide a lot of gorgeous creative opportunity, no words required. I can't find the text anywhere at the moment (and no, I don't mean the Russian Opera).

In this story a beautiful girl is found in the snow by a man. He cares for her and she agrees to become his wife. They have a passionate winter marriage but then as the warmth of spring sets in she becomes listless, till she disappears in the heat of summer, leaving only a puddle on his doorstep. He is desolate without her and yearns for winter to come again.

The Crane Wife would also be lovely.
