Abductions: faerie, alien, and other?
So somehow I got sucked into a TV show last night about alien abductions, and it struck me (not for the first time) how similar the stories sounded to the tales told in the pre-industrial age about being carried off to Faerie. What I'm wondering is... is this a Western phenomenon, or does this motif occur in other cultures, as well?

carried away
Well there are always the tales about demons taking you off into hell and all that. There's a lot of those in Arabic tales, where some demonic, genie type creature carries you away.

And another explanation for abductions is hypnogogic hallucinations, where a sleeping person has a vivid dream/hallucination and experiences sleep paralysis at the same time.

Re: carried away
Every heroine's journey tale (which exist in all cultures) features a descent to the Underworld, often similar to fairyland. Many heroines such as Persephone are carried off by the dark god in order to experience this journey. But now that you mention, yeah, I'm picturing mostly European tales like the Basilisk (Serbia), Tam Lin (Scottish), and The Wild Swans (German/Danish)

Re: Faeries and aliens
It's much the same stories, just different genres. Up until the 1940s fairy lore predominated but after WWII and the splitting of the atom, suddenly stories about aliens (especially movies) started appearing. Many of them drew either consciously or subconsciously from the fairy lore.

So since around the 1950s aliens have replaced fairies as the "mysterious little people". Whereas people were taken by the fairies before, now aliens do it. Inccubus and Succubus have been replaced with alien abductions. Mysterious lights from Will-O-The-Wisp and other fairy fires are now alien spaceships. Instead of seeing something from the corner of your eye in the forest, people are watching the skies.
