Please Help me Find this Fairy Book from Childhood!
Please help me remember the title of this book from my childhood.
It was a novel, about English kid(s) who discover a hidden fairy society living in woods near relative's house on holiday. They befriend a fairy and get involved in the internal fairy struggles. Long train ride featured. Book may be older, from 1950s?
The fairies are tiny, and befriend the kids. The fairy society isn't a magic land like Oz, it's more like a hidden vegetable patch in the garden. I remember a long train ride at night, perhaps in a storm. Also, the fairy(ies) were carried in a satchel to keep them a secret. The kid(s) became involved in the fairy society's inner turmoil.
There's a small chance that there were two fairies in a Romeo & Juliet-type love story, but I'm not 100% on that memory.
The story overall is about secrets. The fairy society is a secret, the fairies themselves are secret, and the kid(s) work very hard to keep them secret. It was mysterious and dark, not a sunny happy Nesbit book.
Finally, the word "fairy" is NOT in the title, and the word "Magic" may be. As a kid, I randomly pulled the book off a library shelf because it looked cool. Back then, I loved magic tricks. I distinctly remember being put off when I realized I was reading a book about fairies, because the title had nothing to do with them. Then the book dragged me in and I was lost to its spell...
Please help solve the mystery! I'm already searching via AskMetaFilter and Loganberry, but to no avail.
Thanks in advance!
