Onset of menses in fairytales?
Looking for "Coming Of Age" fairytales for young women. REd Riding Hood...anyone know of others?

Re: Onset of menses in fairytales?
I think practically any of the better known female fairy tales such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White could be considered coming of age. They take place at a time when the girl is about ready to marry. Sleeping Beauty is set around the girl's birthday. Snow White could be interepreted as the death of her childhood and rebirth as an adult.

Re: Onset of menses in fairytales?
Thank you...here's the thing..I'm planning on telling some stories to teen girls, 15/16 years or so. That age can be tricky to engage in a "story" especially one they might feel they've already heard..Snow White e.t.c. Any less known suggestions?
Sincerely
Annette

Re: Onset of menses in fairytales?
Here are a few that might be relevant. I've tried to include links. Most of these seem to be stories about young women overcoming hardship and obstacles on their way to (it's assumed) happy and established adulthood and marriage.
The Goose Girl
Tam Lin - here's the link to Joseph Jacob's Tamlane
The Six Swans
Donkeyskin

Rapunzel is very strongly linked to your theme. If you think it's too familiar to your audience, you might want to investigate some of the less familiar variants of the tale. Here's the SurLaLune link to Similar Tales Across Cultures

You might also want to look through a few anthologies of tales. Here are a few of my favorites that shouldn't be too hard to track down in a local library.
Yolen, Jane. Favorite Folktales from Around the World. Pantheon/Random, 1986.
Opie, Peter and Iona. The Classic Fairy Tales. Oxford, 1974.
Phelps, Ethel. Maid of the North: Feminist Folk Tales from Around the World. Holt, 1981
Carter, Angela, ed. Old Wives' Fairy Tale Book. Pantheon, 1990.
Jacobs, Joseph. English Fairy Tales

Best of luck!

Erica, Thank you so much...this will be very helpful. This is my first foray into the world of fairytales so it is wonderful to have support.
