Disney's The Little Matchgirl
Many of you may be aware that Disney has done a short of "The Little Matchgirl", based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. It's on the Little Mermaid special edition DVD, and you can also find it on Youtube.

It was supposed to be part of a future Fantasia film, which is why it's wordless and set to classical music--Borodin's string quartet.

I know there are many here who aren't crazy about Disney, but I highly recommend it...you'd be cheating yourself if you dismissed it out of hand because it's Disney. Because this is faithful--in every way--to the Andersen story. Really, the only change that's been made is changing the setting from Denmark to Russia--and that shouldn't matter much, since poverty and suffering are universal.

The only problem I had was, as the music played, I couldn't stop my brain from singing, "Dawn's promising skies, Petals on a pool drifting, Imagine these in one pair of eyes, And this is my beloved..."

(Now...does anyone know if the 1937 Columbia cartoon version is anywhere on video or DVD?)

Re: Disney's The Little Matchgirl
It may have been something being developed for the next Fantasia before Roy Disney left the company. They did cut the part about her coming from an abused home, but I think that's more a matter of storytelling than any attempt to Disnify the story.

Re: Disney's The Little Matchgirl
I read an interview with the director online. They did consider showing something that indicated her abuse (and apparently some of the concept art reflects that), but decided there just wasn't room in the short.

[[ Borodin's string quartet [....] "Petals on a pool drifting, Imagine these in one pair of eyes, And this is my beloved..." ]]

Thank you for the name of that music! I loved all those 'pop songs' that were really from classical pieces, but never tracked them all down.

But now the 'pop' lyrics to "Musetta's Waltz" are escaping me....

Re: Disney's The Little Matchgirl
"Don't You Know" as sung by Della Reese:

Don't you know
I have fallen in love with you
For the rest of my whole life through

Don't you know
I was yours from the very day
That you happened to come my way

Can't you see
I'm under your spell
By the look in my eyes
Can't you tell, can't you tell

Now, don't you know
Every beat of my heart keeps crying out
I love you so
Don't you know

Don't you know
Every beat of my heart keeps crying out
I love you so
Don't you know

Oooh, thank you. I'd forgotten it was Della Reese, too.
