Last week I launched a SurLaLune Fairy Tales Blog to accompany this main site and the discussion forum. I'm still figuring out how I want to handle topics, but realized I wanted a different format for sharing all of the little things I find and see everyday that don't seem to fit anywhere else on SurLaLune. It will be serious and quirky, depending on my topic for the day. I will feature books and other new items, but that is only the beginning. Stay tuned for I plan to offer a few contests in the coming months to give away some fairy tale related goodies through the blog, too. As I experiment, I may end up moving this onto SurLaLune's main site or even abandon it altogether in a few months if it garners no interest. But for now, please stop by and share your thoughts. More new releases for April 2009. Ellen Datow and Terri Windling offer a new collection of short stories for fairy tale fans with their Troll's Eye View. YA favorite authors such as Holly Black, Neil Gaiman, Garth Nix and Nancy Farmer appear in this new collection from the editors who brought us A Wolf at the Door and Swan Sister. Deva Fagan offers a new YA novel, Fortune's Folly, using familiar fairy tale tropes. Alex Flinn, who brought us Beastly in the past, offers up a new modern interpretation of Sleeping Beauty in her A Kiss in Time. March 17, 2009

The original soundtrack score to the cult classic Peau d'Ane by Michel LeGrand is now available at the affordable price of $6.99 USA as an MP3 download. This soundtrack has been selling for well over $20 for the past several years and is now thankfully easier to find at a better price for fans or those hoping to become so. February 2, 2009
Two new books and one long awaiting rerelease will be released in February 2009. Geek Charming, the second book by Robin Palmer in her series, uses the Frog Prince to tell a story set in a modern day high school. Wild Orchid is part of the continuing Once Upon a Time Series from Simon Pulse. Snow White and Rose Red is one of Patricia Wrede's earlier books, retelling the fairy tale of the same name. January 12, 2009 A new year with new updates to the site, many still on the horizon. SurLaLune is now 10 years old and will hopefully stick around for years to come.

Heidi Shoemaker and the Zazzle Elves: I've spent the last few days creating new fairy tale designed shoes at Zazzle.com. Many designs are already available and more are on the way. I've also allowed the designs to be modified by visitors if you prefer a different color scheme. I'm still maintaining the clothing and novelty lines at the SurLaLune CafePress store, but am adding shoes and perhaps some other products at Zazzle in the coming months just to add more variety. The Summer 2008 issue of Faerie Magazine should be hitting a newsstand near you soon. This issue offers not one, but two articles by me. The first is my usual fairy tale column, this time on Rumpelstiltskin. The second is an extra piece that is more about the pictures than text. This summer I've had the opportunity to stand on the fringes of a fairy tale art exhibit that is an outdoor installation at the Cheekwood Botanical Gardens here in Nashville through September 7. In April, I attended a paint party to meet Libby Garner and Annie Freeman. For this year's installation, Libby created a Little Red Riding Hood piece as a life-size storybook painted on large panels of birch. In turn, Annie created a Frog Prince piece for last year's installation. Each artist contributed to both the projects with their support and actual application of paintbrushes. This September, after several years out of print, Koch Vision is rereleasing Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre on DVD in a complete set. Unlike the previously released sets, this one also includes the fan favorite episode, "The Best Moments of Faerie Tale Theatre", most often referred to as "Grimm Party." July 15, 2008
Giuseppe Pitrè, a nineteenth-century Sicilian physician, gathered an enormous wealth of folk and fairy tales as he traveled and treated the poor throughout Palermo. He also received tales from friends and scholars throughout the island of Sicily. A dedicated folklorist, whose significance ranks alongside the Brothers Grimm, he published a 25-volume collection of Sicilian folk tales, legends, songs, and customs between 1871 and 1914. Though first published in their original Sicilian dialect, these tales have never before been translated, collected, and published in English until now. This historic two-volume set collects 300 and 100 variants of his most entertaining and most important folk and fairy tales, along with lively, vivid illustrations by Carmelo Lettere. In stark contrast to the more literary ambitions of the Grimms' tales, Pitré’s possess a charming, earthy quality that reflect the customs, beliefs, and superstitions of the common people more clearly than any other European folklore collection of the nineteenth century. Edited, translated, and with a critical introduction by world-renowned folk and fairy tale experts Jack Zipes and Joseph Russo, this collection will firmly establish Pitrè’s importance as a folklorist. Dover has published a collection of Warwick Goble's fairy tale illustrations as well as a collection of Arabian Nights illustrations by various Golden Age Illustrators. Upcoming in September, Dover will release a new collection of fairy tale illustrations by Golden Age illustrators. SurLaLune turns 10 this year! I can't believe it has been growing for so long. I've been busy with real world projects for the first part of the year, but I want to do some fun things to celebrate the 10 year anniversary. It's not fun for me if it's not fun or at least interesting for you, so I want to canvas for ideas. Also, coming in the next few weeks, more fun reads using fairy tale themes:

Today has been all about updating the picture books published this year in the various book galleries. There's a lot of new picture books coming out in 2008! I've also added other materials such as the Original Broadway Cast recording of Disney's Little Mermaid musical. March 8, 2008 I've spent a goodly portion of the morning catching up on the 2008 New Releases page and incorporating the titles throughout the site. Highlights for March include:
A Curse Dark as Gold by Elizabeth C. Bunce. This novel by new author Bunce uses the Rumpelstiltskin fairy tale to weave a story of family secrets, misdeeds and consequent curses.
Also don't miss The Swan Kingdom by Zoe Marriot and the sixth book in the Sisters Grimm series by Michael Buckley. February 8, 2008 While not directly related to fairy tales, I wanted to remind readers that this is the centennial year of Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery. Her work went hand in hand with my love of folklore and fairy tales during my youth. She also wrote her own riff on the Bluebeard tale (the one which inspired SurLaLune's creation) with her own novel, The Blue Castle. January 7, 2008 Happy New Year to all! 2008 marks the 10 year anniversary of SurLaLune, so expect to see more changes in the coming months in celebration. I've expanded the Fairy Tales Music Page and it is not nearly complete despite the pages and pages of songs already listed on it. I add to it most days during my spare moments, so check back regularly if this topic interests you. I've also updated the 2008 Fairy Tales Releases, so check there for upcoming publications related to the fairy tales on this site. The page isn't empty, it is just in reverse chronological order, so page down it to find the releases for the first quarter of the year.
Finally, don't miss one of the first new releases of the year, Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George. It's a retelling of East of the Sun and West of the Moon. December 15, 2007 Okay, so when I'm stressed I make lists. This past year, I've focused on playlists in my MP3 library. It's amazing how many fairy tale themed or influenced songs there are across musical genres. Today I started adding song lists to the Music page in the bookstore. I've focused on Cinderella so far, but more tales will come. I just wanted to start with one of the biggest ones first. This is very much a work in progress, but a fun one for me. Seems to me it would make a fun research project or a paper for a class, too. I've been nice again and started a reference list for anyone who agrees. Have fun! For those of you living in the UK, not the US, Christian Birmingham's new picture book of Hans Andersen's The Snow Queen is gorgeous. Alas, it's best bought through Amazon.co.uk this year, but will hopefully be published on this side of the pond next year. Also, for those looking for something different for holiday music, The Puppini Sisters--this century's answer for the last's Andrew Sisters--have recorded a version of Andersen's The Little Match Seller (Silent Night) which can be downloaded from Amazon.com or iTunes starting on Dec. 4, but can be previewed immediately. October 27, 2007 I've added Popular Rhymes and Nursery Tales by James Orchard Halliwell. All the text is up, but I need to work on formatting the text on some of the pages. Who knew there was significance in the day of the week you choose to trim your fingernails? See the Superstition-Rhymes. Cut them on Monday, you cut them for health; More tales and books coming in the next few weeks. Also, I've updated some things on the CafePress site, especially the 2008 Calendar. October 24, 2007 I'm working on the redesign of the eBooks section, having completed Perrault, some of Joseph Jacobs' books and one of HC Andersen's. More new stuff coming soon. There's also the usual addition of new titles in different areas of the site, most of which can also be found on the 2007 and 2008 New Releases pages. October 13, 2007 I've completed the redesign of the Illustration Gallery! Over 1,500 illustrations and it's all done with more to come in the near future. Big sigh of relief. The eBooks will be the next and final part of the redesign. Also, one of the most popular pages on SurLaLune this time of year is the Halloween: Trick or Treat! page on the storytime site (which hasn't been redesigned either). September 18, 2007 Thanks to Christine Ethier for her work as the guest annotator for Maid Maleen, the 47th annotated tale on SurLaLune. Christine provided the annotations on the notes page and I added the rest. I've added this tale in honor of the release of Shannon Hale's newest novel, Book of a Thousand Days, which uses Maid Maleen for its inspiration. It's now my personal favorite of Shannon Hale's books, so please be sure to read it yourself as well as gift it to young readers. I've also updated the New Releases page in the bookstore with the 2007 titles. Christine also recently provided the notes for Fisherman and His Wife which I have finished adding to the site. I'm still busily updating book lists and designs as I make up for my time away the last few months. I'm also attacking email, so you might finally receive a reply from me! September 15, 2007 Been busy with some other projects and family matters recently, but have taken time over the weekend to update some titles in various areas. I plan to finish updating the design and add more information in the coming weeks. I participated on four panels at Dragon*Con over Labor Day weekend in Atlanta, Georgia. So far the most obvious news is an ongoing redesign of the SurLaLune website, it's first in seven years. The redesign will take place gradually over the summer months. My goal is to never have any content removed although SurLaLune's appearance will be erratic as pages are redesigned and uploaded. As of 8/29/2007, I have finished redesigning the 47 annotated tales pages and am working on the bookstore and illustration galleries. The redesign has stalled over the past six weeks as I have started another project with my usual headlong intensity. Other Recent News I have a new column appearing in the Summer issue of Faerie Magazine on newsstands in July 2007. The article is titled "Tales of Sleeping Beauties."
As always, there are continuous small changes throughout the site, with new book and film listings added on a weekly basis. I have also finishing updating the poetry sections for each tale with several new citations and the addition of more full-text poetry.
